Its distinctive, fresh, penetrating scent, a little herbal and a little like camphor, is known in the world of essential oils as an oil of victory and a waker of heroes. It can clear self-doubt with real force and pour in a sovereign confidence and leadership, until you believe: “I can. I will prevail.”
Then and now: the “tree of the sun,” victory and wisdom
Laurel Leaf / Bay Laurel held a high place in ancient Greek and Roman culture. It was the sacred tree of Apollo, the sun god, a sign of wisdom, prophecy, and glory. People wove its branches into a crown and gave it to heroes and poets who had won in sport, art, or war. The portrait of Caesar always wears that laurel crown of power and honour. The gene of victory and glory is stamped deep in the soul of the oil.
The familiar gift: a crowning for every bright moment
The core of bay laurel is a strong lift, a strengthening, and a clearing. It can build confidence and clear the line of thought, and it is also a capable helper of the breath and of digestion.
A firm blessing and a clearing
- Skin — a clearing care for blemished skin: Bay laurel clears and resists microbes well, and it suits oily or blemished skin. Blend 1 drop of bay laurel oil into 10ml of aloe gel and, with a cotton swab, dab a little on a blemish. Note: it can irritate. Do not use it over a large area of the face, and be cautious on sensitive skin.
- Scalp — a strengthening scalp water: Add 5 drops of bay laurel and 5 drops of rosemary to 50ml of pure water (with a little alcohol to help them dissolve) and use it as a nourishing scalp spray. It clears the scalp and strengthens the hair at the root.
- A sovereign atmosphere: Before an important negotiation, interview, speech, or contest, diffuse 3 drops of bay laurel, 3 drops of bergamot, and 2 drops of cedarwood. The blend creates a field of confidence, clarity, and strength.
- A rub for the belief that you will prevail: Blend 1 drop of bay laurel, 2 drops of rosemary, and 2 drops of lemon into 10ml of carrier oil. Before an exam or an important meeting, apply it to the temples, the throat, and the chest. Thought can feel clearer, expression firmer.

Learn to crown yourself. When you have finished a challenge, or made any progress at all — even a small one — place 1 drop of bay laurel oil in the palm and breathe deeply. Close your eyes and, with care, set an imagined laurel crown on your own head. Tell yourself: “You did it. You are the hero. You are worthy of all this honour.”
A whisper from the small cosmos
- Mind the irritation: Bay laurel oil is rich in eucalyptol and can irritate skin and mucosa. When you apply it, always dilute it at a low dose.
- Caution in pregnancy and with children: Its energy is strong. Avoid it in pregnancy and with children under 6.
- Bay laurel is not the same plant: In aromatherapy, “bay” usually means Laurel Leaf oil. Bay Rum Tree is another plant, spicier in scent. Do not confuse them.
