Rock rose (Cistus / Rock Rose) is a shrub of the poor, dry limestone soils of the Mediterranean. It has a startling trait: its seeds need the scorch of a forest fire before they can sprout and begin again. This character of moving toward life through a kind of death gives it an unusual energy of change and rebirth. The resin it yields is called Labdanum. From early times it has been a precious spice and a medicine, spoken of as the blood of the phoenix.
A familiar gift: a deep gathering of body and mind
The core gift of rock rose lies in its ability to help stop bleeding, support the closing of wounds, meet wrinkles and repair scars. On the body it is a capable ally for many kinds of “break.” On the heart it can also “stop” a leaking of energy and mend the cracks of the soul.
Repair and skin care with real substance
- A classic repair oil for marks: Blend 1 drop of rock rose, 2 drops of helichrysum and 2 drops of lavender in 10ml of rosehip oil. For marks left by spots, surgical scars or older traces, massage with it over time. It can help them fade and repair.
- A kintsugi night cream: Into 20g of an unscented repair-cream base, add 1 drop of rock rose, 1 drop of frankincense and 1 drop of sandalwood, and stir well. Used as a night cream, it helps soften lines and firm the contour. It is a fitting care for mature skin.
- A warm first aid: For a nosebleed or a small cut (not a large open wound), place 1 drop of rock rose on a cotton pad and press the place. It can help the bleeding settle quickly.
- A diffusion for coming back into the body: After a great trauma, or when you feel “outside yourself,” body and mind split apart, diffuse 1 drop of rock rose, 2 drops of frankincense and 2 drops of vetiver. It can draw us firmly back into the body, and restore a sense of grip and of wholeness.

- A practice of presence: Rock rose can help us gain a substantial sense of being here, so we live this moment fully, no longer held hostage by old wounds or by fear of what has not yet come.

- Extremely thick: Rock rose oil (or the absolute) is very viscous, like syrup. You may need to remove the dropper and take it with a toothpick or a glass rod.
- The scent asks to be tasted slowly: Its extremely complex animalic note can put people off at the first breath. Give it time and meet it with attention. You may find a soul-beauty that is warm and deep.
- A fine fixative: Like oakmoss, it is an excellent base note in natural perfume. A very small amount can give a perfume an old, warm, mysterious and refined texture.
