Opening scene

When the season turns or the air is poor, does your breathing grow heavy? The nose feels like a blocked passage, the chest feels shut, as if you stood in a closed room full of dust. Then you need a wind from the Australian open country to blow the haze aside and clear the way of the breath.

That wind lives in eucalyptus essential oil. Its clean scent, with a little camphor, seems in a moment to set you in a sunlit eucalyptus forest. Every breath is a thorough clearing.

Its past and present: the koala’s larder, the Fever Tree of the first peoples

The eucalyptus, also called the gum tree, is among the most representative plants of Australia. It is the chief food of the koala, the country’s treasured animal, and nourishes those small creatures. For the first peoples of Australia it was also a medicine chest. For centuries they knew how to burn the leaves to clear the air and turn mosquitoes aside. When someone had a fever, they wrapped the person in the leaves to help the heat fall, so eucalyptus is also called the Fever Tree.

The familiar magic: a guardian of the breath

The outstanding work of eucalyptus essential oil in care of the airways comes mainly from 1,8-Cineole, often above 80%. This constituent is a natural helper for loosening mucus and an antimicrobial constituent. It can help ease a blocked nose and a cough, and restrain the growth of unwelcome microbes in the airways.

A recipe for an open breath

  • A clearing steam inhalation: Drop 2–3 drops of eucalyptus essential oil into a bowl of hot water. Cover the head with a towel, close the eyes, and breathe deeply for 5–10 minutes. The vapour carries the clearing molecules of eucalyptus to the nose and the lungs and eases a blocked nose fairly quickly. Keep a distance so you are not scalded.
  • A homemade chest balm for an open nose: Blend 3 drops of eucalyptus and 2 drops of lavender into 10ml of coconut oil or shea butter. Before sleep, or when the nose feels blocked, apply it to the chest and the back so the night breath can stay smoother.
  • Diffusion like a forest air: In flu season or on a hazy day, diffuse eucalyptus indoors. It can clear the air and reduce microbes in it, and it can also make you feel as if you stood in a forest, with the spirits lifted.

An unexpected talent: a pioneer of household cleaning

The marked antibacterial and antiviral capacity of eucalyptus makes it not only a sweeper of the body, but also a clearer of the room.

Keeping the home cleaner

  • A cleaning spray that reduces microbes: In a 100ml spray bottle add clean water and a little white vinegar, then 15 drops of eucalyptus and 10 drops of lemon. The blend suits mould marks in the bathroom, kitchen surfaces, and the bin. It reduces bacteria and lifts stale odour.
  • A bedding spray that asks dust mites to leave: Fill a 30ml spray bottle with clean water or alcohol, add 10 drops of eucalyptus, shake, and spray mattress, pillows, and carpet. Leave them to air-dry. This can help turn dust mites away.

Release of the soul: an emotional wind that sweeps stagnation

On the level of energy, the scent of eucalyptus is open, upward, and unbound. It can help us break limiting, stagnant moods. When you feel trapped, in feeling or in thought, the scent is like a strong wind that blows fog aside and brings a wider view and a freedom that slips its bonds.

Making inner space

When the mood is heavy and an old pattern holds you, diffuse eucalyptus. As you breathe, imagine its energy clearing the inner congestion and making new space, so that new thoughts and possibilities can enter.

A whisper from the small universe

The eucalyptus family: There are many eucalyptus oils. The most common is blue gum, Eucalyptus Globulus. Its scent is vivid and its action marked, but it does not suit children. Eucalyptus Radiata is milder and better suited to children and sensitive people. When you buy, look at the Latin name.

Use care with children: Because 1,8-Cineole is high, infants under 2 years should not use eucalyptus essential oil. Older children should also have a milder type, diluted at a low concentration.

It is not for swallowing: Eucalyptus essential oil must not be taken by mouth. Keep it where children and pets cannot reach it.

Eucalyptus, this guardian of the breath from the southern hemisphere, uses a pure and forceful strength to clear obstacles for body and mind and to bring a bright, open sky.
