Opening scene
Do you sometimes feel soiled by the complexity and murk of the adult world, body and mind filmed with grey, longing to return, like a child, to a state that is clean and innocent? While you are leaving an old habit (such as smoking), do you need a fresh force to wash the body and steady the will? You look for a scent like an angel’s breath: clean, light, with a thread of sweet green.
That pure “angel’s breath” is myrtle. Its clean, fresh green-leaf scent, lightly camphoraceous and sweet, is a fine messenger of clearing and new beginning in the essential-oil world. It can gently wash dust from the airways and clear clutter from the mind, so that from the inside out you return to a child’s purity and innocence.
Past and present: a sacred tree of love and purity
Myrtle (Latin Myrtus communis) is, around the Mediterranean, a sacred plant of love, marriage, and purity. In Greek myth it is closely tied to Venus. Brides wore wreaths of myrtle, asking for a harmonious marriage and children. In the biblical story, after the flood the dove brought back an olive branch, and an angel brought myrtle, a sign of new life and peace after cleansing. This purity and new beginning form the core of its healing energy.
Familiar magic: a gentle washing of body and mind
Myrtle’s core is its support and clearing of the respiratory system, especially where mucus is present. Importantly, it is very gentle. Compared with eucalyptus, it is better suited to long use by children and by those who are frail, to clear the breath and guard health.
👼 Pure skin care and breath
- A signature skin water or serum of innocence: Myrtle suits oily, blemished, and combination skin. Add 5 drops of myrtle to 50ml of white rose hydrosol as a clarifying toner. Or blend 2 drops of myrtle, 1 drop of geranium, and 1 drop of clary sage in 10ml of jojoba as a serum that balances oil and clears pores.
- A further step — care for bright eyes: Myrtle hydrosol helps ease tired eyes and improve dark circles and puffiness. It is a gentler choice than chamomile hydrosol, and it can be used as an eye compress.
- A child’s breath, in the diffuser: Diffuse 3 drops of myrtle, 2 drops of linalool thyme, and 2 drops of ravintsara. This blend is very gentle. In a change of season, diffuse it in a child’s room to guard an easy breath.
- Steam inhalation while leaving cigarettes: When the breath feels tight or the craving rises, put 2–3 drops of myrtle into hot water and inhale the steam. It helps clear the lungs and brings a fresh feeling.
An unexpected talent: a filter for the mind
Myrtle does not only clear the body. It is also like a filter, helping us strain out inner and outer pollution of the spirit. It helps us see the nature of things, no longer confused by a complex surface or a low mood. For someone easily caught in tangle, jealousy, or resentment, myrtle can bring a clarity that returns to what is simple.
🍃 Letting the mind become simple again
- Meditation for a pure heart: Diffuse myrtle while you sit. Picture a white light washing the whole body and the energy field, carrying away whatever is no longer clean.
- More harmonious relations: Myrtle can help dissolve inner conflict and struggle, so we meet others with a purer, more spacious heart, and relations grow more harmonious.
Purity and new life of the soul: innocence in this very moment
Myrtle’s energy is purity and new beginning. Like a gentle spring rain, it washes the dust of winter and lets things grow vivid again. It teaches that, whatever we have lived, the purity and innocence inside have never left. At any time we can choose to wash the dust from the mind and return to the self that was always true. It meets the throat centre and the heart centre, helping us speak cleanly and love sincerely.
🕊️ Learning to return to what is true: when the world hems you in and the heart grows complicated, put 1 drop of myrtle in the palm and breathe deeply. Feel that clean, fresh breath. Tell yourself: “I choose to set complexity down and return to the simple. My heart stays pure, as at the beginning.”
Whispers from a small cosmos
- A gentle guardian of the breath: If you need one oil that can guard the family’s airways for a long time and with gentleness, myrtle is a safer, finer choice than eucalyptus.
- Know which myrtle: There is green myrtle and red myrtle. Aromatherapy usually uses green myrtle (Green Myrtle), fresher in scent; red myrtle (Red Myrtle) is a little warmer in energy. Both are rich in eucalyptol.
- Walking with the goddess of love: Remember its link with Venus. When love or a relationship needs a clean, harmonious energy, myrtle is a good companion.
Myrtle, this pure angelic messenger, uses a clean, gentle breath to help us wash dust from body and mind and, in clearing after clearing, embrace again the self that is innocent, simple, and bright.
