Opening scene

Monday morning. You sit at the desk before a dense plan of work, and the mind feels wrapped in fog, running half a beat slow. You need a strong coffee, or a scent that can pierce the mist and light a spark of thought, so clarity and attention return at once.

That force is rosemary. Its strong, clear, herbaceous and piercing scent is one of the finest clarifiers you can offer the brain.

Its story: from “dew of the sea” to the herb of memory

The Latin name of Rosemary, Rosmarinus, means “dew of the sea.” The plant is said to grow near the shore, bathed in sea wind and moisture, and to take its name from that. In ancient Greece, students wove rosemary wreaths and wore them before an examination, believing memory would grow stronger. In Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Ophelia says that rosemary is for remembrance. From early times this herb has been tied to clear thinking and to memory that does not fade.

A familiar gift: a star for the brain

The ability of rosemary to support memory and attention has been looked at by science. Constituents such as 1,8-cineole can, through inhalation, enter the blood and inhibit an enzyme that breaks down the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Acetylcholine is an important substance for learning and memory. In plain words, rosemary is like the star in Super Mario: for a short while the brain becomes stronger and more focused.

Waking the energy of the brain

  • A study blend: Place 3 drops of rosemary and 3 drops of lemon in a diffuser. The scent is fresh and can meet mental fatigue. It is a fine companion for study, work and making.
  • A quiet ally before an interview or an exam: Before an important occasion, place 1 drop of rosemary on a tissue or a collar and inhale. It can help the head stay clear and the thinking quick.
  • A morning waking: Add 1 drop of rosemary to warm water for washing the face. Press a warm towel to the face (keep it away from the eyes) and breathe deeply. Sleepiness can lift, and the day can begin with a brighter mind.

An unexpected talent: a helper for the growth of hair

Besides its work for the mind, rosemary is a recognised star in hair care. It can support circulation in the scalp, stimulate the follicles, and so ease hair loss, encourage growth, and balance the oil of the scalp.

A generous scalp care

  • A lively hair oil: In 30ml of jojoba or camellia oil, add 8 drops of rosemary, 5 drops of lavender and 3 drops of cedarwood. Once or twice a week, before washing, take a little and massage the whole scalp with the pads of the fingers for 5–10 minutes. Leave it for half an hour, then wash as usual.
  • An easy daily care: Into each portion of shampoo or conditioner you press out, add 1–2 drops of rosemary, mix, and use. It can also care for the scalp day to day.

The strength of the soul: an oil of courage that feeds resolve

The energy of rosemary is warm, steady and full of force. It can disperse coldness and hesitation, and strengthen will and confidence. When you feel lost and short of follow-through, the scent can give you a push, help you decide, and help you act.

Finding inner strength again

Before an important decision or the start of a new project, diffuse rosemary. The scent can help you meet the strength inside, so you feel more decisive and more able to face the challenge.

A whisper from the small cosmos

  • It can irritate; take note: Rosemary is a vigorous oil. People with high blood pressure or epilepsy, and women who are pregnant or nursing, should avoid it.
  • Not in the evening: Its strong encouraging effect may disturb sleep. It is not suggested before bed.
  • Choosing a type: Rosemary oils differ by chemistry. Cineole rosemary is good for a clear, waking head. Verbenone rosemary is gentler and better for the skin. Camphor rosemary is better for relaxing muscle. Choose according to the need.

Rosemary, this magic herb of memory, can light a spark of thought and also give you the courage to act. For anyone who seeks clarity and strength, it is a companion that is hard to do without.
