Opening scene

When you wake, do your joints feel stiff, like parts that have rusted? Does the skin look dull, without light, as if a film of grey had settled on it? Or has the heart been occupied by an old resentment or a stubborn thought, a block of ice that will not melt, so you cannot move forward with ease? You want a golden warm current that can melt all of this from the inside out.

That current from the earth is turmeric. Its warm, spicy scent, thick with soil, is an outstanding melter and activator in the world of oils. It can gently loosen stiffness in the body and break stubbornness in the mind, bringing back warmth, flow, and light.

Then and now: a “sacred spice” of light

Turmeric has more than four thousand years of use in India’s Ayurvedic tradition, honoured as the gold of life. It is not only the soul of curry. At an Indian wedding it is a sacred paste on the couple, a sign of purity, prosperity, and light. It is taken as the sun’s energy made visible on earth. That sacred quality of light and warmth is the core of its healing energy.

The familiar gift: living energy poured into the body

Turmeric’s notable ability to move blood, to answer oxidation, and to warm makes it a fitting choice for uncomfortable joints, a brighter complexion, and a cold body. It supports circulation and pours a flowing vitality into the body.

Deep warmth and a clearer glow

  • A classic “golden glow” mask: in a spoon of plain yogurt or honey, 1 drop of turmeric oil. Mix and leave on the face for 10 minutes, keeping clear of the eyes. It can brighten a dull tone and ease the look of marks. Note: it may stain the skin yellow for a while. Evening use is wiser.
  • A further serum for marks: blend 1 drop turmeric, 2 drops frankincense, and 2 drops helichrysum in 15ml tamanu oil, as a repairing serum on local marks. It supports repair of stubborn blemish marks and scars.
  • An oil for supple joints: blend 3 drops turmeric, 4 drops copaiba, and 3 drops black pepper in 15ml carrier, such as St John’s wort oil. Massage stiff, cold joints for a deep, lasting warmth.
  • A full-body bath of sun: when the body feels cold and circulation is sluggish, add 3–4 drops, first mixed with a spoon of milk or honey, to the bath, so warmth returns from the inside out.

An unexpected talent: an ice-breaker for the mind

Turmeric’s energy does not only melt stiffness in the body. It can also break the ice of negative feelings that have hardened inside, especially deep anger, resentment, and a stance of being wronged. Its scent, full of the sun’s force, can light the dark corners of the heart and give courage and strength to set the past down and break an old pattern.

Break the ice in the heart

  • A diffusion of release: 2 drops turmeric, 3 drops bergamot, and 2 drops frankincense. The blend can make a safe, warm field, so we can look gently at feelings long held down, and let them go.
  • A guard of boundaries: if other people’s heavy feelings reach you too easily, apply diluted turmeric over the solar plexus. Like a gold veil of light, it can strengthen an energetic boundary and guard the sun within.

Flow and release of the soul: leaving a past that no longer serves

Turmeric’s energy is about flow and release. Like moving magma, full of force, it helps melt whatever blocks the current of life. It teaches that holding an old hurt only makes life stiff and cold. Only release brings real warmth and light. Linked with the solar plexus, it can strengthen personal force and the power to transform.

Learn to set down and go on: when an old hurt still occupies you, apply 1 drop of diluted turmeric over the heart. Picture a golden warm current around the heart, gently melting that ice. Tell yourself: I choose release, I choose warmth, I choose to go on.

Whispers from a small cosmos

  • Mind the stain: the oil is deep in colour and readily dyes skin and cloth yellow. Use a low dose, and wear dark clothes. Yellow on the skin can be wiped away with lemon juice or milk.
  • Always dilute: it can irritate the skin. Dilute it well in a carrier.
  • Use with care: people with clotting problems, or those taking anticoagulant medicines, should avoid it. It is not for pregnancy.

Turmeric, a messenger of the earth’s light, uses a warm and steady golden energy to help us melt stiffness and clinging in body and mind, and, in flow and release, to hold the inner light again.
