Opening scene

Do you feel wrapped, layer on layer, in pressure and anxiety, mood low, as if a cloud would not leave the sky above you? Has life lost its colour, so that nothing stirs interest, and you need a firm switch of mood that can turn your world brighter? You want a scent like a clear shaft of sun, able to pass through every grey and let the heart clear at once.

That useful switch is lemon verbena. Its extremely fresh, sweet, highly penetrating scent, like lemon candy, is a well-known supporter of mood in the world of oils. It can pull you out of the mud of low feeling and turn, in one gesture, toward a channel of sun, joy, and hope.

Then and now: a “magic herb” held as sacred

Lemon Verbena held a high place in Europe. The ancient Romans called it the tears of Venus. Druid priests held it as a sacred herb, believed to link with the divine and to carry a magic of wishes fulfilled. It is always tied to light, joy, hope, and inspiration. That inborn quality of the sacred and of light is the source of its healing energy.

The familiar gift: let sunlight live in the heart

The core magic of lemon verbena is its marked calming and lifting action on the nervous system. It can meet pressure, anxiety, low mood, and sleeplessness, and it is a fitting choice when emotion is the question.

Bright sun and a spark of invention

  • A skin note: high risk, not for routine care: rich in citral, lemon verbena is very irritating to skin and photosensitising. Routine care of the face should be avoided. A safer choice is its hydrosol, used as a toner compress, which can still brighten and soothe.
  • An emergency spot, extremely dilute in spirit: only for certain stubborn skin questions, such as a viral wart, and only with a qualified guide, a toothpick may carry a tiny amount of neat oil onto the spot. Keep it off healthy skin.
  • A diffusion that clears the grey: when mood is low and pressure is great, diffuse 2–3 drops of lemon verbena alone. Its bright scent takes the sense of smell quickly and can shift the mood with force.
  • A muse spray for ideas: 3 drops lemon verbena and 5 drops grapefruit in 30ml pure water. When you need an idea or a way out of a stuck place, spray the room. It can bring an unexpected spark.

An unexpected talent: an accelerator of dreams

Lemon verbena does not only lift mood. It can open the switch of “what the heart asks may come.” Its energy of light and hope helps break the limits of “I do not deserve this” and “I cannot.” It lets us dare to dream and believe we can bring a dream about. It clears negative thoughts that block the way. It is a capable accelerator of making something visible.

Let a dream come more easily

  • A ritual for a dream board: while you make a dream board or write wishes for a new year, diffuse lemon verbena. It pours in an optimistic energy, so that as you wish, you already seem to see the wish fulfilled.
  • Break the impossible: when a task looks as if it cannot be done, smell lemon verbena. It says: do not think so hard; first let the mood rise. Then much becomes possible.

Optimism and making-visible: you are the light of your world

The energy of lemon verbena is about optimism and bringing a wish into view. It is like pure solar energy, without a thread of shadow. It teaches that our feelings and beliefs create our reality. When we choose joy and hope, the wider world makes room. It reminds us that we ourselves are the beam that lights our own world. Linked with the solar plexus, it can greatly strengthen personal radiance and creativity.

Learn to be your own sun: when low feeling takes you, place 1 drop of lemon verbena on a tissue and set it on the chest. Close your eyes and picture a small sun rising in the chest, rays going out, scattering the dark. Tell yourself: I choose joy; there is unbounded light within.

Whispers from a small cosmos

  • Mind irritation and light: because it is rich in citral, lemon verbena irritates the skin. If you dilute it, stay under 1%, a very low level. Sensitive skin should not take it on the face. It is also photosensitising; after use, keep out of the sun.
  • Precious and scarce: a fine oil is produced in small quantity and is costly. Lemongrass and similar oils are often sold in its place. Buy only from a house with a good name.
  • Which verbena: aromatherapy usually means Lemon Verbena. The oil of the other plant, Vervain, is extremely rare, and its actions differ. Do not confuse them.

Lemon verbena, a magician of sunny mood, uses an extreme and bright scent to help us clear the grey in one gesture, trust hope, and, in a radiant optimism, create what we want.
