If the vanity can keep only one carrier oil, it has to be Sweet Almond Oil.
It is the standard oil of aromatherapy. Patricia Davis calls it an excellent lubricant in her aromatherapy encyclopedia. It is mild enough for babies, and the oil therapists reach for first in a full-body massage.
1. Why refined?
Unrefined almond oil has a clear nutty scent and a shorter shelf life. Refined sweet almond oil is pale yellow, lightly scented, and more stable — a better base for a blend.
2. What it does
- Ease itch: Helen McGuinness notes that it can relieve itching and calm inflamed skin.
- Very mild: suitable for babies, pregnancy, and sensitive skin.
- Spreads well: it does not dry too fast or feel greasy. A comfortable massage medium.
3. Two classic blends (with sources)
Blend 1: baby massage oil for sleep
- Who: babies of 3–12 months, or adults with delicate skin.
- Source: The Complete Book of Essential Oils and Aromatherapy, Valerie Ann Worwood (Page 214)
- Sweet Almond oil: 30ml
- Essential oils: Roman Chamomile 1 drop + Lavender 1 drop.
- How: after a bath, use a light full-body touch. The mildness of Sweet Almond oil helps protect a baby’s fragile skin barrier.
Blend 2: a nourishing cleansing oil
- Who: all skin types, especially anyone who should not use mineral oil to remove makeup.
- Source: The Complete Book of Essential Oils and Aromatherapy, Valerie Ann Worwood (Page 299)
- Sweet almond oil: 30ml
- Apricot kernel oil: 30ml
- Coconut oil: 10ml
- How: massage onto dry skin with dry hands to dissolve makeup, then press with a warm towel. A simple way to cleanse while conditioning the lashes.
