When skin is so dry that it flakes, or fine lines show, an ordinary lotion is no longer enough. This is when you want Avocado Oil.
Unrefined avocado oil is deep green and the richest in nutrients, but the scent is strong. Helen McGuinness notes that avocado oil is rich in vitamins A, B and D, and highly penetrative — a rescue for dry, dehydrated skin.
1. Why refined?
For the face, refined avocado oil (pale yellow) loses the heavy fruit scent and the thick feel, and keeps the richness. It is easier to live with, and less likely to clog pores.
2. What it does
- Deep reach: it can move into the deeper epidermis, not only sit on the surface.
- More suppleness: it supports collagen in the skin, and suits mature skin.
- Ease eczema: Valerie Ann Worwood writes that it soothes eczema and damaged skin.
3. Two classic blends (with sources)
Blend 1: Rich Body Massage Oil
- Who: skin that is extremely dry, flaking, or dull.
- Source: Aromatherapy: Therapy Basics, Helen McGuinness (Page 158/195)
- Avocado oil: 10ml (the rich core)
- Sweet almond oil: 30ml
- Wheatgerm oil: 5ml
- How: avocado oil is thick. It is usually blended with lighter carriers at 10%–20%, which lifts the richness of the formula.
Blend 2: a nourishing night oil for the face
- Who: from about age 30, when fine lines and dryness show.
- Source: The Complete Book of Essential Oils and Aromatherapy, Valerie Ann Worwood (Page 297)
- Add 5ml avocado oil to a facial oil blend.
- With essential oils: Sandalwood or Frankincense.
- Why: the penetration of avocado oil helps carry those oils deeper into the skin.
